picture of Richard 'Groove' Holmes
Richard 'Groove' Holmes
Richard was born in Camden/NJ in 1931. Starting as a bass player, he later switched to the organ, teaching himself and developping a style of his own. Remarkable was his using of the pedal, producing powerful bass lines.

It was in 1960, that the famous pianist Les McCann met Richard in a Pittsburgh club. He was immediately convinced that Richard was a superb organ player, and made a recording with him on the Pacific label. This first recording of Richard led to his nick name 'Groove'.

In the following, Groove recorded a series of albums with a trio (guitar and drums). In the 70's, he played together with organist Jimmy McGriff, battling with him on stage a "Hammond Battle". Groove cooperated also with Jimmy Witherspoon, Willis Jackson, Joe Pass and Houston Person. Without doubt, he was one of the leading organ players in jazz.

Richard passed away on 29 June 1991 in St. Louis.
