Monika Herzig
Monika (*1964 in Albstadt), who first had to learn the melodica before receiving her initial piano lessons at the age of nine, was also active as a church organist during her youth; she played alto sax in her high school band as well. She studied at the Weingarten University of Education and spent a year on an exchange program at the University of Alabama in 1987. After graduating there in 1988, she moved to the U.S. with her future husband, guitarist Peter Kienle, and earned her master's degree from the University of Alabama in 1991. During her doctoral studies at Indiana University, she developed "Elements of Jazz Piano Pedagogy" (1997). She subsequently joined the faculty.
As a musician, she has collaborated with Kienle’s fusion band BeebleBrox and with David Baker; she has released six albums with her Monika Herzig Acoustic Project since 2000. Her album "Sheroes" was released in 2018; she toured internationally with it alongside musicians such as Reut Regev, Jamie Baum, Leni Stern, Jennifer Vincent, and Rosa Avila. Her album "All in Good Time" followed in 2024. In 2011, she published a musicological monograph on David Baker (David Baker – A Legacy in Music); this was followed in 2017 by her introductory book "Experiencing Chick Corea". In 1994, Monika won Down Beat's Best Original Composition competition with "Let's Fool One." Between 1994 and 1996, she was a two-time finalist in the WTPI Winter Jazzfest Competition in Indianapolis with BeebleBrox and won the competition with Oliver Nelson jr. The Indiana Arts Commission awarded her Individual Artist Grants in 2000, 2003, and 2005. In 2012, Monika received an "Outstanding Rating" from the Association of American University Presses for her book. The Jazz Journalists Association named her a "Jazz Hero" in recognition of her contributions to jazz in Bloomington, Indiana. from Wikipedia |
