Jan Johansson
Jan (*1931 in Söderhamn) was a pianist and jazz musician. He began playing
piano in 1942. In the early 1950s, he started studying electrical engineering
at Chalmers University, but dropped out to dedicate himself entirely to music.
He played in the bands of Kenneth Fagerlund and Gunnar Johnson. From 1958 to
1960, he accompanied Stan Getz and his band on a Scandinavian tour before joining
Oscar Pettiford in the house band of the Jazzhus Montmartre, where he accompanied
other American jazz stars in København. Johansson was the first European member
of Jazz at the Philharmonic. In 1961, he moved to Stockholm. During the 1960s,
he created timeless jazz arrangements of Swedish and Russian folk songs, such as
the 1963 album Jazz på svenska ("Jazz in Swedish"), which sold over a million
copies. In 1967 he was a member of Arne Domnérus' sextet at the Tallinn Jazz Festival.
He also collaborated with Astrid Lindgren. His most famous piece is probably "Hey, Pippi Longstocking". On this piece, he worked closely with his friend, bassist Georg Riedel, who continued their work on the Astrid Lindgren television films after his death. Jan died in November 1968 in a car accident. from Wikipedia |
