Bill Doggett
Bill Doggett (* 1916 in Philadelphia) began playing the piano at the age of 9. During the 30's, he was attrackted by the hot era of jazz, which let him found his own band in 1938. He toured together with Lucky Millinder. The 40's saw him with the group The Ink Spots, with Jimmy Rushing, Lucky Thompson, Illinois Jacquet, Willie Bryant and Louis Jordan.

It was not before the early 50's, Bill discovered the Hammond organ, influenced by Wild Bill Davis. Danny Adler says,"Doggett became a pioneer of the Hammond organ. ... no one did more to develop the big Hammond than Davis and Doggett until the advent of Jimmy Smith in 1955."

Bill led his own groups throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also, he toured Europe several times, where he made recordings for Black & Blue. In November 1996, Bill Doggett passed away.
