David Haney
David (* 1955 in Fresno, CA) is a composer and jazz pianist. He grew up in
Calgary/Canada, and studied at the University of New Orleans in 1977 and then
continued his studies at Clarke College in Vancouver. From 1980 onward, he
received private lessons from the composer Tomas Svoboda. During this time,
he worked as a composer of contemporary music. His works were performed in
Portland, OR, and at Linfield College, McMinnville, OR. He composed more than
100 compositions of sacred music.
David turned to jazz in 1997. He became known through his collaborations, initially with Julian Priester, John Tchicai, and Hank Jones, and later with Buell Neidlinger, Han Bennink, Mat Marucci, and Wilbert de Joode, with whom he recorded several albums for the Cadence and CIMP labels in the 2000s in various formations under his own name. He gave a solo concert at Porgy & Bess in Wien/Austria. In 2004, he toured Belgium, Germany, and France with Julian Priester. He played at the Valparaíso Jazz Festival with his own trio; with the trio, which then included bassists Michael Bisio and Adam Lane, the albums Blues Royale and Blue Flint Girl were created during sessions for CIMP in 2006. In 2008, he recorded duets with drummer Andrew Cyrille (expanded to a trio with Dominic Duval for some pieces). Haney lives and works in Portland. from Wikipedia |
