Brad Mehldau
Brad (* 1970 in Jacksonville, FL) is a jazz pianist. He began piano lessons at the
age of six. He studied piano and composition at Berklee College of Music and the New
School for Jazz & Contemporary Music. His teachers included Kenny Werner, Junior Mance,
and Fred Hersch, who was arguably Mehldau's greatest influence.
In 1994, he was a member of the Joshua Redman Quartet's European tour, consisting of Brad, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade. The following year, in 1995, he founded the Brad Mehldau Trio with Larry Grenadier (bass) and Jorge Rossy (drums). The main influences in Brad's music come from Franz Schubert, Oscar Peterson, and Keith Jarrett, but also from Miles Davis and John Coltrane. His piano playing is often compared to that of Bill Evans, even though, according to Brad's own statements, it is not the same as his own. In addition to his own compositions and jazz standards, Brad's repertoire includes music that at first glance appears to be far removed from jazz, such as that by the alternative band Radiohead, folk singer Nick Drake, and the Beatles. Brad, whose Germanophilia and interest in German culture shines through in the names of numerous original compositions ("Sehnsucht", "Zauberberg", etc.), can be considered one of the most important jazz pianists of the last decade. In addition to the elegiac nature of his music, his ability to improvise two-handed, contrapuntal pieces with independently conducted voices is particularly characteristic. For the album Where Do You Start (Nonesuch/Warner), released by the Brad Mehldau Trio, the pianist received the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Jazz in the category Best Jazz Album (Foreign Country) of 2012. In March 2018, the album After Bach (Nonesuch/Warner), inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's Wohltemperiertes Klavier, was released. Between 1998 and 2020, Mehldau was nominated for a Grammy Award ten times. In 2020, he won the award for Finding Gabriel in the category Best Jazz Instrumental Album. from Wikipedia |
