Buddy Miles
Buddy (* 1947 in Omaha, NE) was an American rock, blues, soul and funk drummer and singer.
Miles began playing the drums at the age of nine, and at twelve he joined his father's
jazz band. In the late 1950s he played with various vocal groups, including The Ink Spots,
The Delfonics, and Ruby & the Romantics. While touring with Wilson Pickett in 1966, Michael
Bloomfield noticed him and recruited him into his band The Electric Flag. After Bloomfield
left the group in 1968, Miles briefly led the band as its frontman. The band's second album,
released during this time, flopped, and Miles left.
That same year, he formed his own band, Buddy Miles Express. The group was signed to Mercury Records and enlisted Jimi Hendrix as producer for their debut album, Expressway to Your Skull. Miles subsequently also worked as a studio musician on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and Muddy Waters' Fathers and Sons. In 1969, Electric Church, the second album by the Buddy Miles Express, was released. It was again produced by Jimi Hendrix. After Hendrix disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the end of the year, he formed the Band of Gypsys with Miles and bassist Billy Cox. After an aborted performance at a festival in Madison Square Garden, during which Hendrix was completely deranged, Jeffrey fired Miles from the band. Miles then supported John McLaughlin on his album Devotion and released his solo album Them Changes in 1971. Between December 1971 and May 1972, Miles toured with Carlos Santana. Between 1973 and 1976, Miles released a total of five albums, then went into temporary silence. In 1987, Miles worked again with Carlos Santana, this time as lead singer. In the early 1990s, he played with Bootsy Collins. In 1994, he re-established the Buddy Miles Express, producing two more albums. In 1997, he toured Italy with More Experience, playing 20 shows. In 2002, he formed a new band, the Blues Berries, and toured Europe with Mitch Mitchell and Randy Hansen. Miles died in 2008. from Wikipedia |
