Jimmy McGriff
Surely, Jimmy (* 1936) inherited his musical skills from his parents, who were
both pianists. But he started on bass, drums, saxophone, and vibes. Later, he
added the piano, and studied at the Combe College of Music in Philadelphia and
at Juilliard School in New York. It was at that time, Jimmy discovered his
interest for the organ. He got lessons from Jimmy Smith, Richard Holmes, Milt
Buckner, and even from a classical organist. "...the basic idea of what I'm doing
on the organ came from the church," says Jimmy. Consequently, his musical roots
are to be found in gospel and blues. "...I'm more of a blues organ player,"
McGriff stresses.
After placing his first hit in 1963 ("I've got a woman"), Jimmy developed his career subsequently. In the time to follow, he signed with different record labels and had lots of successful albums. After a period of experimenting with electronic keyboards in the 70's, Jimmy turned back to the Hammond B3 in the 80's. Then, he began a cooperation with Hank Crawford the result of which has been the release of some popular CDs. Since a couple of years, Jimmy suffers from an incurable illness, and thus is limited in his activities. Nevertheless, he still tours also outside the USA. Jimmy passed away on 24 may 2008. |
