John DeFrancesco

John (*1940) started playing trumpet at the age of six. His interest in the Hammond organ arose when he heard Jimmy Smith for the first time in the 50's. He at the end switched to the organ when he got to own a Hammond himself.

After having moved to Philadelphia in 1967, John performed in clubs in and around this area. He met such greats as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, and Richard Groove Holmes, who influenced him deeply.

When his son Joey, at the age of eight, showed his huge interest in the jazz organ, "Papa" John gave up his career as organ player in order to support his son's extraordinary skills.
